THREE QUESTIONS FOR THE DIRECTOR: FREDERIKKE ASPOCK
Out of Bounds is your first long movie. How difficult is it to make your first movie and what are your experiences making it?
- It's always difficult to make your first movie; whether it's getting finance or figuring out which story is the right one, just making it is difficult. With this particular one, though, we go hit by an unpredicted snow storm so that was very tough.
At Kustendorf, your short movie Happy Now is also shown. For this movie you won the Cinefondation award in Cannes in 2004. How has this award, that you received when you were still a student, helped you, and what advice would you give to today's students?
– It was actually my thesis film so I was just graduating in the same month. It definitely did a lot for me. I had decided with that film to make a film that was full of me and not to listen to too many teachers' opinions. It was very important to me to listen to myself and make a film that was entirely out of my head – I only got the help of some really trusted professors. To have that win in Cannes, it meant that it was worth fighting for and that I should continue to listen to myself. So that's my best advice: do your own thing. Don't try to satisfy all the people, don't try to satisfy all your teachers, don't do what you think the audience might like, just do what you believe in.
This is your first time in Serbia and at Kustendorf. What are your impressions?
– I have had the best time - people are so nice! I love the dancing, I love the music, I love the food, and I think the generosity and hospitality of this festival is really unique.
